Rod Builder Yoshiharu Utsumi

Ever since I started fly fishing in my third year of junior high school, I have been searching for the perfect fly rod.

During his 40+ years of fly fishing experience, he has fished mountain streams all over Japan, from Hokkaido in the north to Kumamoto in the south, and has also experienced trout fishing in the United States, Canada, Ireland, and Denmark.

I've done everything from fishing midges to matching the hatch, but my favorite style of fishing is short drift fishing with larger flies, such as Catskill patterns, and short leaders.

I personally prefer parabolic action rods such as Young's and Summers bamboo rods, but I believe that everyone has different preferences when it comes to rods. Using my experience using a variety of rods, I will suggest and create a rod that is perfect for your fishing style and preferences.

Workshop Guesthouse Hanse

The Yoshiharu Rods workshop is located in a room in the guesthouse Hanse (formerly Hanse Elementary School) in the Hanse district, at the source of the Ibo River (Mikata River).

You can also try out the demo rods, so please stop by when you go fishing in the Ibo River or Hatto River (please contact us in advance).

Guesthouse Hanse is also available for overnight stays. The inn is proud of its wild game dishes and original Japanese sake.

We hold fly casting and fly tying schools from time to time, so please contact us through the inquiries on this website or the reservations and inquiries on the "Hanse Lure Fly Area" website.

The "Hanse Lure Fly Area," a natural stream managed fishing area exclusively for lure flies, is scheduled to open on March 1, 2025, and will be limited to one group per day.
